Highland Build Supplies: reducing stock write-offs by 40%
Highland Build Supplies is a family-run builders' merchant in Inverness with an annual turnover of £3.8m. When they contacted us in early 2023, they were writing off around £95,000 of stock each year due to over-ordering, damage and obsolescence. Their purchasing manager ordered based on gut feel and supplier deals rather than actual demand data.
We installed a simple demand-forecasting spreadsheet linked to their point-of-sale system, trained the purchasing team on minimum-order-quantity calculations, and introduced a weekly stock review meeting that takes 20 minutes. Within six months, write-offs fell to £57,000 on an annualised basis. The warehouse team also freed up two pallet rows of floor space, which they now use for a new product line generating £40,000 in additional revenue per year.
